DONALD WINS THE DOUBLE

Sunday 22nd saw the medal finals take place in not so great weather compared with Saturday.

Donald Standaloft showed the form that got him down to scratch this year with a fantastic 3 under par 65, which included 6 birdies, in tough conditions netting him the scratch and 1st class trophies.

Robert Jardine's nett 70 (84) was good enough to take the 2nd class trophy home even with a 9 at the first hole.

Well done guys

This Sunday, 29th September, is the Greenkeepers Quaich which is the annual competition which allows the members to show their appreciation to the green keeper for their efforts throughout the year. I'm sure you will all agree that Duncan deserves a good turnout for his first year on the course.

Entry is by donation with £2 mandatory for sweep and twos. This year will be a shotgun start at 9.30 in order for the prize giving to go ahead straight away. All players should be at the club ready to go for 9.15.

A few ties still left to be played so can you all please arrange ASAP so that the competitions can be finalised. The Rothesay Motor Services Winter League is now just around the corner so get your name on the sheet in the clubhouse or contact Donald or Sam to get your entries in before the closing date of 20th October. Format and schedule will be determined by how many competitors we get. Remember any non-members can join for the winter for £100 and get the chance to compete in the Winter League.

Finally huge thanks to all the volunteers who showed up last Thursday to brush the sand into the greens. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by all at the club and the greens were a joy to play on, for this time of year, on Sunday.

Grouse open

Prize winners along with sponsors David and Mary-Jane Kilpatrick from The Bike Shed.

SAM RETAINS THE GROUSE

At long last the weather seemed to shine at Port Bannatyne Golf Club on Sunday for the last Major Singles competition of the season, The Grouse Open. A good field took part in glorious sunshine with the course in excellent condition.

Two rounds of 12 holes is the order of play for this competition with members’ handicaps being reduced to two thirds.

After the morning rounds it was tight at the top with Francois Lintermans leading the way with a nett 43 closely followed by 5 golfers on 44.

The second round separated the field a bit more and it was a nervous wait for Sam Jamieson after he completed the second round in nett 41 which included a double bogey 5 at the par 3 4th. Francois came in with nett 42 which meant Sam won The Grouse for the second year running by virtue of the better second round.

With a huge array of prizes the prize giving took some time to complete. A full list of all the prize winners is as follows

Overall Winner – Sam Jamieson, Second place – Francois Lintermans, Third – Robert Turnbull, Fourth - Elaine Thom, Fifth – John Black

Best Scratch score – Donald Standaloft, Second place – Alistair Shaw, Third – Graham Fisher, Fourth – Jim Thom, Fifth – Gordon McIntyre

Weather Wins Again

Well, it was another quiet weekend last week due to the lovely Scottish weather. Only 6 brave souls endured the weather on Sunday in the Lavender Trophy and at time of going to print it was unsure if the competition would be a counter. A further update next week.

This Sunday is one of the biggest open tournaments of the season with The Grouse taking place. Kindly sponsored by The Bike Shed, The Grouse is another two rounds of 12 holes competition with prizes galore for morning and afternoon rounds as well as the usual nearest the pin prizes. All golfers welcome with ballots from 08.00am until 11.30am for the morning rounds. The weather looks ok for now so fingers crossed for a good day.

A reminder to all members that there are still some ties to be played and there will be sheets on the notice board this week for The Bute Motor Company 4 man team and also The Past Captains 4 man team competitions.

Despite the weather the course is in excellent condition so a huge thanks to the greens staff for all their hard work on the course.

GRAHAM BAGS A GROUSE

A very quiet weekend last week at The Port with The Bennie and Wee Bennie, at Rothesay, along with the weather on Sunday, putting a hold on any golf at The Port.

As reported a few weeks ago, Port member, Graham Dunn had a magical hole in one at the 8th hole at Rothesay during a Texas Scramble. Graham is pictured receiving his gallon of Famous Grouse Whiskey from Macs Bar owner George Ross who sponsors the 8th Hole at Rothesay Golf Club.

This weekend is another quiet one at the Port with the McLean cup at Rothesay on Saturday and The Kingarth Open on Sunday. For those not taking part in these two events there will be an extra medal on Saturday 10th and the August medal on Sunday 11th. Usual ballot times for both.

A reminder to all members to ensure that you keep up to date with any competitions you are still involved in and try and get them played as soon as possible in order that they can be completed before the end of the season.

Greenshields Nearly Blows It

A great turnout at the Port today, despite the weather and Butefest, saw the 21st running of the ever popular Jimmy Whitelaw trophy. This 2 x 12hole competition is always well sponsored and today never disappointed with a host of prizes.
Taking home the winners trophy today is Stephen Greenshields who tried his best to throw it away at the 11th hole with a 9, yes nine. It's a good job his morning round was decent (Net 41) and he was only 1 over par for the second 12 before the 11th. Stephen's score of 83 was good enough though to beat Jack Standaloft into second place.
Third was Graham Fisher with Colin Renfrew taking the last of the major prizes.
Best scratch score of the day was Donald Standaloft with 87.

A special mention to Gordon McIntyre who won the afternoon round with an excellent net 41, unfortunate not to make it into the major prizes.
Nearest the pin winners:
1st in two - John Whitelaw
3rd in two - Tommy Wilkinson
4th - Matthew Dunn
5th in two - Alistair Shaw
10th - Hector Whitelaw jnr
18th - David Whitelaw

Only two 2's today by Donald Standaloft and Hector Whitelaw jnr

Women’s winner on the day was Cathy McKirdy who pipped Zoe Whitelaw into second place.

A massive thanks to the Whitelaw family for their continued support to the club and a huge thanks to Graham Dunn and the greens staff for state of the course and greens which, even with all the rain, were in great condition.

This weekend (Sunday 4th August) is the Lavender Trophy with usual ballot times.

DOUBLE VICTORY FOR STANDALOFT

Busy busy week at the Port this week with the championship deciders and the ever popular Standaloft Greensome Open. First of all we will start with the championship competitions.

Elaine Thom won the Ladies Championship for the fourth time by defeating rookie Zoe Whitelaw 6 & 4. Well done to all winners.

Sunday was the ever popular Standaloft Greensomes. Sam Jamieson and Leighton Thomas were leaders in the clubhouse for the majority of the day with a score of 62.8 until club champion Donald Standaloft partnered by Ian Andrews came in with an excellent nett 58 to take the title. Scratch prize went to David Greer and Liam Shanks with a 71.
Well done also to Elaine Thom and Ann Kennovin on winning the ladies section

This mixed scramble is always well supported and winners on the night were Hector Whitelaw, Ann Kennovin and Billy McFadyen. Runners up on the night were Donald Standaloft, Jim Bicker and Michelle Standaloft who was dragged out of retirement for the night. In her words she “carried the other two round the course”. Family Affair at the Port

Mike Ivory winner, with Jim Thom

Busy two days at the Port this weekend with two big competitions on Friday and Saturday.
Friday was The Cowal Builders Seniors Open which was open to all golfers over the ripe old age of 50. Two different age classes in this tournament and an overall winner. Overall winner went to Mike Ivory with a very impressive 77 for nett 61. Winner of 50-65 age group went to Jim Thom with David Coll taking the over 65 category. Graham Dunn took home the scratch prize with a 74. Mike is pictured below receiving his prize. Thanks to Cowal Builders and Plumbing Supplies for sponsoring this event.
Saturday saw the second running of Bute Island Foods open which consisted of pairs playing two 12 hole rounds. Scramble in the morning and greensome in the afternoon. A great day was had by all with differing weather ensuring that it wasnt easy out there. It ended up a family battle for the top places with Roddie and Jordan leitch narrowly defeating Scott and Matthew Dunn to take home the prizes.  Many more prizes were given out on the day. A huge thanks to Bute Island Foods for their generous sponsorship of this event which I am sure will run for many years.

This weekend is another busy one for the club with the annual McFadyen mixed scramble on Friday night and the always popular McLeod Homes Port Open on Sunday. All welcome to both events with a rolling ballot on Sunday with the last tee off at 1pm.

Another well done must go to, our Match Secretary, Donald Standaloft who carded a gross, 6 under par, 62 on Saturday which, along with his course record equalling 60 last week, brings him down to scratch. Well done Donald.

Rothesay Motor Services Winter League

Mark Crichton and Stephen Greenshields with Megan Taylor

A substantial victory by 6&5 by Mark Crichton and Stephen Greenshields over Donald Standaloft and Davie Kilpatrick in the final of the Port Bannatymne Rothesay Motor Services Winter League, not only lifted the trophy but extended their unbeaten record throughout the Winter. Their place in the final stages secured as long ago as November, the only blotches in their campaign had been two halved matches.
In a day of large margins, Matthew and Scott Dunn’s 7&6 victory over Gordie McIntyre and Jim Thom condemned the latter to the dreaded Wooden Spoon.
The closest match was the 1up win by Frankie Lintermans and Graham Dunn over Hector Whitelaw and Alan Stewart, with a scratchy bogey 4 at the 18th being enough to secure the victory.
In the intriguing Leitch family shoot-out brothers Jordan and Ryan beat father Roddie and brother Matthew by 2&1. Ryan declared “It was easy!”, though clubhouse opinion seemed to be that it was Jordan who had done the damage.
A packed clubhouse had enjoyed end-of-term festivities, not least the excellent lunch by Claire Jamieson and the copious hospitality from Davie Reid of sponsors Rothesay Motor Services. A draw for a golf bag was won by Iain MacLeod, harshly described by Match Secretary Donald Standaloft as ‘being near the end of his career”. Little does he know!
Club Captain Hector Whitelaw announced that the club had been the recipient of a generous £500 from the Mikey McArthur Memorial Fund, while Mark Crichton graciously thanked all who had contributed to the day.
After Winter’s final fling, with everything except hailstones, the players now look forward to the milder climes of Summer, with the new season beginning with the Peggy Adams Subscription medal on Sunday.

Undaunted Wooden Spoonists Gordie McIntyre and Jim Thom

Wilk Welcomes New Seniors Formula

Port Bannatyne Seniors, under new Convener Mike Ivory, have adopted a new regime for their Tuesday morning sessions. As a break from the tried and tested  weekly prescription of
Stablefords, a 9-hole medal will be played  off half handicap once a month, using holes 1-8 and the 12th.
In Tuesday’s inaugural playing, the emphatic winner was Tommy Wilkinson. His nett 33 was good enough to win by 3 shots, while also posting the best scratch score.
Ironically, with the new formula aimed at giving the Seniors more opportunities to maintain their handicaps, the CSS deemed it to be a non-counter.
Leading scores:-
1. Tommy Wilkinson 44 (11)  33
2. Mike Ivory 45 (9)  36
3. Jim Bicker 45 (8)  37

Port Club Bucks the Downward Trend

In an age when many golf clubs are suffering severe financial pressures, the members attending Port Bannaryne’s AGM on Wednesday were heartened when Treasurer Jim Thom reported a surplus of over £3000 for season 2018/19.
The improvement on last year’s figures was due to an increase in subscription income, regular use of the clubhouse for functions, plus generous sponsorship and grants.
In his review of the year, Captain Hector Whitelaw paid tribute to the work, over many years, by greenkeeper John Marshall, who had just retired, and the support given to him by Greens Convener Graham Dunn. The Club looked forward to welcoming new greenskeeper Duncan Lyon in the coming weeks.
Match Secretary Donald Standaloft reported that there had been 26 different winners of competitions throughout the year and presented a comprehensive fixture list for the coming season.
Extra pressure would be exerted on all match play competitors to play their ties by the deadline. The Club was grateful for the support of several generous sponsors for its varied competitions.
The meeting passed the fee structure as proposed by the committee, involving a 4.5% increase for most categories. This was due in part to the £3.25/person increase in the annual levy to the SGU.
Captain Hector Whitelaw continues for a second year in office, with a largely unchanged committee. Sam Jamieson comes in as Vice-Captain, while continuing with his current successful role as Clubhouse Convener.

Winter League will see new winners

With all four semi-finalists consisting of relatively new pairings there was always going to be a new winner this year. That will now be either Donald Standaloft and Davie Kilpatrick or Mark Crichton and Steven Greenshields, emphatic winners of Sunday’s semi finals.
Semi final results:-
Crichton & Greenshields bt Manvell & Ivory 7&5
Standaloft & Kilpatrick bt Black and Jamieson 5&4
Finals day on Sunday March 24th will leave the rest of the field fighting for final places and the wooden spoons, with lots of prizes to be won on the day

After weeks of match-play, when you can always blame your partner for a poor result, it was everyone for himself in Sunday’s February medal, with  its more demanding stroke-play format. Best score of the day was by form horse Sam Jamieson, whose 64 won the first class medal. A stroke behind was Matthew Leitch, taking the second class medal, with both attracting the match secretary’s knife, with the CSS on the day being 66. Donald Standaloft took the scratch award with his score of 68.While Matthew took the family glory, father Roddie was happy to settle for being the day’s financial winner, his magic 2 at the 12th hole scooping the 4 week rollover.

This Sunday its back to the nitty gritty of the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League with Donald Standaloft & Davie Kilpatrick facing Sam Jamieson and John Black in the first semi-final at 8.30, with Mark Crichton & Stephen Greenshields out 10 minute later to face Mike Ivory and Mike Manvell.

While the other matches will not see the winners challenging for the podium, there is enough family rivalry obvious from the ties to make sure everyone is going flat out to claim bragging rights.

Other matches:-
8.50. Dunn/Lintermans v Dunn/Marshall
9.00  Whitelaw/Stewart v Whitelaw/McKirdy
9.10  Bicker/Renfrew v Thom/McIntyre
9.20  R & J Leitch  v Standaloft/McArthur
9.30  M & S Dunn v R & M Leich

Sunshine breaks for semi -finalists

A miserable early morning of cold and rain gave way to sunshine on the Port course  as four pairs emerged to contest the semi-finals of Rothesay Motor Services Winter League
Quarter final results:-
Crichton & Greenshields bt F. Lintermans 3&2
Standaloft & Kilpatrick bt H.Whitelaw 9&8
Ivory & Manvell by McKirdy & Whitelaw 7&6
Black & Jamieson b tMarshall & Dunn 3&2
R & J Leitch bt S & M Dunn 5&4
Renfrew & Bicker bt R & M Leitch 5&3
Thom & McIntyre halved with Standaloft & McArthur

With no substitutes permitted in the knock-out stages, other commitments by their partners meant some players had to fight a lone battle. One such was Hector Whitelaw, who, fresh from the heady heights of last week, found the combination of Donald Standaloft and David Kilpatrick too demanding a task, succumbing by 9&8
Conversely a place in the semi-finals is a singular achievement for Davie Kilpatrick, after many years away from golf in shinty management and now only two games away from a winning comeback.

TIGHT MARGINS DECIDE QUALIFIERS AT PORT

Sunday’s final matches in the league sections of Port Bannatyne Motor Services Winter League were skewed somewhat by an overnight malaise in the Dunn household, which resulted in some players left single handed and walk-overs for others. At the end of the day, Match Secretary, Donald Standaloft, had some head-scratching to do before being able to determine the quarter finalists. This was particularly the case in League B, with three teams on 11 points for the final qualifying spot. They could not be divided on the basis of their head-to-head results as each had won one each. I was only after scrutinising the margins of victory that Donald announced that. On that basis, Graham Dunn, absent on the day, and Francois Lintermans would go forward to the quarter finals, leaving Gordie McIntyre and Jim Thom and Ryan and Jordan Leitch, left to scrap for the minor placings.
Central to McIntyre and Thom’s demise was super-
sub Colin Renfrew who partnered Captain Hector Whitelaw in defeating them 4&3. This was Colin’s fourth appearance as a sub over the winter, boasting a 100% record and thereby repeating a similar record last season. His rates are so reasonable too!

Week 7 results:-
Jamieson/Black by MacPhail/Barnett 5&4
Standaloft/Kilpatrick bt R & M Leitch 7&6

Tension mounts for Winter League hopefuls

Looking over the 18th fairway

With the Port course only suitable for sledging, the last qualifying round of the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League had to be put on ice.
In League A, despite having no matches in the last two rounds, leaders Mark Crichton and Steven Greenshields are already high and dry in the quarter-finals, as are the two Mikes, Ivory and Manvell.
In league B, the Whitelaw/Stewart, Dunn/Lintermans and McKirdy/Whitelaw combos have all but secured their spots. This Sunday, however, the promised thaw should see tense battles for the last qualifying places in both leagues in the postponed week 7 matches.

Supersub Colin Renfrew

Not for the first time this season , Colin Renfrew again proved himself the must-go-to substitute, here standing in for Jimmy Dunn to help John Marshall to victory. His rates are so reasonable too!

Jamieson/Black halved with McIntyre/Thom
McKirdy/Whitelaw bt McPhail/Barnett 5&4
Dunn/Marshall bt Standaloft/Kilpatrick 4&3
Whitelaw/Stewart bt R & J Leitch 5&4

While the vagaries of the fixture list (an odd number in their league exacerbated by another couple subsequently pulling out) mean   that League A leaders Mark Crichton and Steven Greenshields are idle  for both weeks 6 and 7, they are already high and dry in the quarters, as are the Mikes, Ivory and Manvell.
In League B,  the Whitelaw/Stewart, Dunn/Lintermans and McKirdy/Whitelaw combos have all but secured their spots. However, this Sunday’s series of last qualifying matches will see  battles for the  for the last place from both leagues.

Not for the first time this season, Colin Renfrew again proved himself the must-go-to substitute, here standing in for Jimmy Dunn to help John Marshall to victory His rates are so reasonable too!
