Club Championship & The Jimmy Whitelaw Trophy

A busy weekend at the Port Golf Club with the Club Championships on Saturday followed by the Whitelaw Trophy on Sunday.
Saturday saw 3 titles decided. The ladies between Z.Whitelaw and A.Rutherford with a reasonably close affair giving Zoey her first honour.
The Arthur Slack trophy was even closer going to the last hole with G.Fisher prevailing over R.Jardine.
The Championship Final between D.Standaloft and M.Dunn was nip and tuck in the morning before Donald opened up a 6 hole advantage at lunch. The afternoon session was much tighter with Matthew having a 1 hole advantage before eventually succumbing 5&3. Congratulations to all.
Sunday was indeed a family affair with many of the Whitelaw family travelling from overseas for a competition that had not been able to be played for 2 years due to covid. 34 men and 3 ladies took part in 2 x 12 hole rounds in beautiful conditions and thanks to Graham and Duncan the course was in brilliant order as usual. Roddie and Hazel kept everybody fed and watered and a very enjoyable day ended with an array of prizes presented by young Amelia Whitelaw.  Main prizewinners and doing the double from Saturday were G.Fisher and Z Whitelaw, among the other prizewinners were
R.Mcarthur. R.Stewart. M.Dunn. Scratch winner L.Poole. G.Mcintyre. C.Lawrence. I.Mcfarlane. R.Leitch(jnr). J.Thom. S.Hay.
Many thanks to the Family for their support of the club again, look forward to next year.

Rothesay Motor Services Winter League

17th January 2022

Glorious conditions met the golfers on Sunday at Port Bannatyne Golf Club in the penultimate round of the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League.

In League A David Driver and David Reid secured their place in the knockout stages of the competition with a healthy 5&4 victory over Graham Dunn and Colin Renfrew, who will be slogging it out in the wooden spoon area of the knockouts as they can now no longer qualify. The other four teams in the league have it all to play for with all four able to qualify with victories in the final game. 2&1 victories for Sam Jamieson and Jim Bicker over Hector Whitelaw and Allan Stewart and for Matthew Dunn and John Black over Iain McFarlane and David Greer ensured the final placings went to the last game.

In League B David Kilpatrick and John Whitelaw also secured their spot in the knockouts with a 1up victory over lone ranger Leighton Thomas who has played the majority of games on his own. Francois Lintermans and John McBride more or less booked their spot in the next round with a 2&1 victory over Graham Fisher and Sean Lawrence. Mike Ivory and Duncan Lyon and Robert McArthur and Gordon McIntyre will need to hope for other results to go their way after their halved match on Sunday.

In League C it is a lot closer at the top with 4 teams all in the running for top qualifier. Donald Standaloft and Jim Thom took top spot away from Stewart Izzat and Phil Williams after defeating the pair 4&3 and now look favourites to top the league. New members Chrissy Lawrence and Neil McKirdy have weathered the storm at the start of their campaign and now sit in third place after they defeated Iain Andrews and Dougie Menzies with a score of 2up. In the final game in the league father and son duo of Roddie and Ryan Leitch secured a 5&4 walkover victory after a call off from Mark Crichton and Mike Manvell.

This Sunday, 23rd January, is the third round of the Winter Trophy stableford competition with next Sunday 30th the final round of the Winter League matches.
